Richard MacDonald’s sculpture arrests our attention: it commands the space, and we are drawn into a sensory experience that continues to unfold on many levels. This many-layered fascination is what makes the sculpture of Richard MacDonald intriguing, exciting, and challenging – it is not something we can take in at a glance, and understand in an instant – this is what gives it power. The Ritual series exemplifies this principle to the highest degree. Composed of two independent sculptures, a male and female figure, and one composition of the two interacting with each other. Like the taut string of a bow, there is a powerful sense of pent-up energy in the form of the female dancer. We sense that her dance is primal, instinctive and intense. Her male counterpart is the embodiment of muscular control: his strength tightly reigned and purposeful. Each figure individually makes a beautiful statement about the capacity of the human form for expressive movement, and together the composition has a rhythmic pulse that speaks of the force that draws the male and female together.
